Extreme minimalism

I keep an eye out for interesting personal and family sites and I just wanted to share this site by Robert Lenne: http://www.robertlenne.com/

When I looked at Robert’s site, I was immediately inspired by its simplicity.  So often minimalist sites are white.  The black background just seemed new and fresh. In my eagerness I shared the site with Caryn, the response was… well lets just say she did not sure my enthusiasm.

Caryn’s response was “it is black”, she then turned up her nose, shook her head and went back to watching knitting lessons on youtube.

Robert, I like your site and I am working through your required reading for product designers.

A love of reading is a wonderful thing but how do you store the books?

I don’t remember a single time in my life when at least one book has not been close at hand.

Jason and I are avid readers and believe that a love of reading is a wonderful thing that should be encouraged particularly in childhood. And at the tender age of 4 months Penelope already has quite a library thanks to many of our family and friends.

We are deciding how to store and display Penny’s books so that it is easy for her to find them and keep them tidy and undamaged. I like the idea of forward facing shelving so the front of the books can be seen, I think this would be more inviting than only seeing spines. Space may limit this idea but there will be room to change the display every so often to keep it interesting.

I have grand visions of a tree incorporating shelving that spans the wall and I’m still working on this idea, I will post the result when it’s done!

Penelope's chair

Penelope's Chair

The one thing I was certain of having in the nursery was an oversized chair, the type that would take our daughter from babyhood reading in the lap of Mum and Dad, through to her own adventures curled up with books, building cubby’s and playing games. Oh and one that would sleep an adult comfortably when needed.

Without thinking too much more about it I walked into the second hand shop one day and there it was, big, square, comfy and beige and it seemed to be waiting……… So I thought about it, measured the chair, measured the space, thought about it some more, decided to buy it, then not to buy it and then panicked in case someone else had bought it, and the next day I organised it’s purchase and delivery.

Our idea is to have the chair recovered according to Penny’s choices as she grows up so I reupholstered it in fabric remnants that have been taking up space since 1993! When I finished the chair’s personality came out, it seemed to say (not too quietly)- come sit with me, we’ll have fun – exactly how I imagined it would.

So for the moment the chair is a comfy place to feed Penny and to read to her before bed and I confess to whiling away some hours curled up there myself while Penny is sleeping, reading a book with a cold drink, daydreaming or just watching her sleep.

Relax and enjoy the company

So yesterday was my birthday and Jason invited people over for drinks to celebrate, nothing big just 8 or so and only from 5 until 7 or so, but it’s the “or sos” that would make the night fun but usually put me into a mild panic beforehand.

In the end it was 8 friends plus partners and a couple of extras and as we said goodbye to the last guests not long after 11pm, cleaned up the last of the dishes, fed Penelope and got settled for the night I had a chance to reflect.

It was great to catch up with friends and family, it was great for them to catch up with each other and it was a chance to relax at the end of the week, I chance that I may have missed if not for the need to take a breastfeeding break. As I took 30 minutes out to feed Penny everyone was fine, people who were hungry got food,  people who were thirsty got drinks, platters of food made it to the balcony and drinks were added to the esky all without me doing it.

So the afternoon of stress including a 3pm trip to Woolies with a tired baby for fruit and cheeses, furious chopping and plattering of food, a 3 minute shower and feeding Penelope before guests began to arrive was the last of its kind in our house.

So my tips for relaxing and enjoying the company:

  • Pre-order food platters or ingredients early, cold platters from supermarkets, ready to cook packs from butchers and poultry shops, and pick them up early in the day or the day before, of course if people offer to bring something along accept with a thank you ,
  • Fill the esky with ice and drinks the day before,
  • If someone offers to help, take them up on it and let them do it their way,
  • Do not let a baby miss daytime sleeps if its going to be a busy night.
